Congrats, ladies! I'll be emailing you this morning to ask which format you'd prefer.

I'm hosting a "blog party" over at the Dreamspinner Press blog today. That's a first for me, so if you get a chance, come on over and hang out with me!

CONTEST: False Start

In anticipation of the release of False Start on Wednesday, I thought it might be fun to run a little contest for a couple free copies of the book!

So between now and Wednesday morning, leave a comment here or at my Facebook page with the name of one of your favorite songs from the first time you were ever just flat-out stupid in love with somebody, along with a line or two of lyrics if you're so inclined. Maybe you were in college; maybe you'd just started working; maybe you were precocious and had it all figured out in junior high. Whatever the age, what music provided the soundtrack to your life?

Okay, the connection to the novella is a bit of a reach, but the strain of nostalgia that weaves through the story reminds me of Phil Collins's "Against All Odds", which I listened to ad nauseum my sophomore year in college while I crushed hard on a senior heartthrob.

Phil plaintively asked, "How can you just walk away from me, when all I can do is watch you leave"

*grabs own heart*

I'll choose two winners at random first thing Wednesday morning and post their names. At that point, I'll request e-mail addresses from the winners so I can send the book in the ebook format of their choice.

(P.S. That heartthrob finally noticed me, and we spent a glorious spring hanging out, staying up till all hours talking, and fooling around. Even after he graduated we stayed good friends -- he came to my wedding and a couple years later I went to his -- and we still stay in touch.)

Excerpt: False Start

Here's an excerpt from False Start, which will go on sale next Wednesday, April 25. There's a little sexual content and some cussin' in the excerpt. Nothing y'all can't handle. ;)

Summary: It’s Tucker Locke’s ten-year college reunion, and he doesn’t have much to show for himself. Sure, he’s a successful lawyer with a nice car and a nice apartment, but his life is empty, and Tucker knows why. A decade ago, not ready to come out of the closet, he left Whit Jamison behind.

Tucker’s spent ten years pretending to be straight—ten years thinking about his mistakes. But all the time in the world couldn’t prepare him for the reality of seeing Whit again. Whit’s taller, more mature, more attractive than ever, and every bit as out and proud as he was ten years ago. Time hasn't changed the chemistry between them, and it looks like Tucker might get a second chance. All he has to do is brush aside the years of lies and embrace one powerful truth.

Excerpt: The whole thing started on the first day of my senior year at Caswell College in Danesboro, North Carolina, home of the Wildcats, when I first laid eyes on Whit.Collapse )

I will have a release in 2012!

(...which is more than I managed to accomplish in 2011...)

Yes, there's a new novella on the way, tentative release date of late April, published by the good folks at Dreamspinner Press. I'll keep you posted as I learn more. In the meantime, here's a teeny tiny sample from the new story, working title False Start:

Small-town life can be hard on people who are... let’s say different. If you’re a young man, for example, who reaches the age of fourteen and awakes one morning awash in testosterone, and that young man realizes that he could give a shit about the girls he’s supposed to be noticing at school and instead spends as much time as possible shadowing a senior dreamboat who happens to be a guy, well, that’s a problem. While I should have been studying algebra and world studies and English, instead I memorized Tucker Locke’s class schedule and managed to plant myself where I’d get to see him multiple times a day. I might have stalked him a little, in a barely pubescent way.

Wait, it's 2011?

Good grief. Where did the first three quarters of the year go?

*looks around*

Sorry for the radio silence, y'all. Travel, family stuff, work stuff... the days blend into months. I'm sure most of you can relate!

So tell me one thing that's been great about 2011 for you so far, and maybe I can catch up a little. A movie? A book? A TV show?

For me, the highlight of the summer TV season was Suits, and I loooooved this fan-made Harvey/Mike bromance video to Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts":
